Who do you look to as a fashion mentor? Who do you base your hairstyle, beauty and fashion decisions on?

Playwright Oscar Wilde once stated: 'My great mistake, the fault for which I can't forgive myself, is that one day I ceased my obstinate pursuit of my own individuality.'

Wilde, born in Ireland in the 19th Century, would probably find it even more difficult this day and age in the new millennium unless, perhaps, he had the opportunity to have tea with Madonna.

It is a widely accepted fact of today's society that we are exposed and swayed on a daily basis by the subtle, and not so subtle influences of TV advertising, news media, and magazine and print. It is these influences that teach us we need to conform to certain trends and fashions, hugely impacting individual personalities and in some cases telling people that being 'accepted' demands following the latest fashion trends set by our size-0 fashion role-models, paying to have hairstylists work their magic to achieve the same cut as Hollywood's ingénue du jour and religiously following the latest and greatest celebrity diets. TV shows such as 'Extreme Makeover'and 'The Swan' transform every day folk into stiletto wielding Barbie clones, with tens of thousands of dollars of invasive surgical treatments the majority of people would never even consider.

Women and men alike are constantly exposed to picture-perfect images of what the perfect woman should look like, images that ignore the rules of nature such as sun damage, wrinkling, and other natural signs of aging. It is these images that set the standard of beauty, leaving a target audience of women striving to achieve this 'natural beauty' in their lives.

There is certainly nothing wrong with someone who strives to look their best, but ask yourself 'Who is it that decides exactly what that means?'

According to clinical psychologist Patricia Moscou, each of us must take an active responsibility and be aware of our own 'impression management.' This means thinking for ourselves and taking a conscious approach to everyday decisions such as hairstyle, hair color, make up, beauty treatments and fashion preferences.

Impression management isn't intended to encourage creating unhealthy obsessions with your look, it is simply the way YOU choose to present yourself.

Vogue magazine's former marketing director, Diana Lewis Jewell stresses that women and men alike need to be clear and understand exactly who is influencing our daily lifestyle decisions.

- Are you influenced by strangers you pass every day in public? People you don't even know, but somehow their opinions are held as an important influencing factor.

- Good friends naturally influence these decisions, however in many cases there is an underlying, subconscious competition to be the most attractive, or receive more attention than our peers.

- Employers or co-workers are often in a position of moderate to heavy influence already, so their opinions can play a vital role in deciding on hair color or fashion trends to follow.

- Family members can have intentional (protective) or unintended impact on fashion choices.

OR..... it is YOU? Are you the one who has control of your fashion and hairstyle preferences, do you decide what you like and why?

Dr. Kennon M. Sheldon, a psychologist at the University of Missouri-Columbia, has joined forces with researchers to discover exactly what actually makes people happy. It may come as a shock to learn that monetary status isn't number one. Neither is popularity or having the whitest, straightest teeth. According to their findings, the most important aspects of achieving happiness are self-esteem and autonomy. Feeling comfortable with, and endorsing, your personal choices. Unfortunately it can sometimes be an up-hill struggle to be aware of our own personalities, in a world where we are surrounded by strong opinions and influences.

When we talk of 'self-acceptance' we're not talking about a world where everyone rejects makeup and beauty treatments, self-acceptance means keeping an open mind, making the most of our natural beauty attributes to achieve personal satisfaction with your drawer full of makeup and your blow dryer... If that's what makes you happy!

It seems that some fashions, although immensely popular with celebrities, fashion magazines and the general public, are not the most practical for female drivers. The latest craze for long fringes is putting people on the road in danger. Eye-skimming fringes, copied from celebrity styles, mean some female drivers are in danger of a disaster, a survey revealed.

The survey revealed that 67% of women have a hairstyle which could, potentially, fall into their eyes while they are driving a vehicle. In this poll, which was conducted of 1,000 female drivers, half admitted they did not tie back their hair before embarking on a journey. 33% did not think it was necessary to control their hair before driving and 8% said they did not want to ruin their hair.

Of the women surveyed 1% admitted that their hairstyle had caused an accident, near-miss or a sudden, unexpected manoeuvre due to their vision being temporarily impaired. The survey was conducted by women's car insurance company Sheila's Wheels, and also discovered three out of five women take their hands from the wheel to rearrange their hair or move it out of their eyes.

Sheila's Wheels' spokesperson, Jacky Brown commented: "Not many women think of their hair as a potential driving distraction. But with the latest trends requiring styling round the face and eyes, it's essential we are aware of safety."

According to the survey, women in Northern Ireland were the most fashion conscious, 80% regularly change their hairstyle to keep up with the latest trends. North-east England's women were least concerned about following fashion trends and south-west England's women drivers have the most practical driving haircuts.

Brown pointed out: "There are so many hair accessories available that can secure hair in place without compromising style. It's just about finding the right one for you and making sure it's handy whenever you step behind the wheel."

High profile hairdresser, Martyn Maxey commented on the study, he said: "For some celebrities, a change of hairstyle is headline news. Take Kate Moss and The Fringe for example - in recent weeks we've been inundated with requests for the long fringe and despite it falling over the eyes, it's now a fashion statement and people want it."

Maxey continued by giving tips for having beautiful hair and driving safely, he recommended keeping a hairband, headband or alice band in the car's glove compartment at all times. He said that for the extremely style conscious there are many different styles of hair slides available to clip long fringes or styles that may interfere with driving, back.

Other suggestions he makes are to leave a chunky velcro roller in a long fringe while driving to keep it out of your eyes, when you arrive at your destination your fringe will be perfectly styled, for the ultimate glamour, a pair of designer sunglasses propped on top of your head will keep all stray hairs out of your face.

Fashionable hairstyles are obviously not only going to be practical for driving, however it is easy enough for women to keep a range of hair accessories in their car to minimise risks of accidents due to something as silly as hair in the eyes.

So, is it worth risking accidents to stay stylish in the car? It seems that it is not only the risk of hair falling into the eyes and obstructing vision that is a problem, but also women removing both their attention from the road and their hands from the wheel to rearrange their hair.

It seems women should be more concerned about their safety , that of any passengers and others on the road, than they should be about the immaculate state of their appearance, namely their hair.

Why is the short crop so popular? It's sexy, stylish and the ultimate hairstyle for today's busy women and more than that it's also a liberating cut lets look at it in more detail.

Short hair has been popular since the 1920's when it was the height of fashion and it had a massive revival in the sixties when Twiggy launched millions of imitators with her distinctive look.

The short cut then was seen as a statement of liberation and freedom and that is happening again today.

Today's women are busy and the short crop is the ultimate time saver as well as looking great.

More women than ever are using short hair as a statement having after life changing events such as a divorce or career move to make a statement of liberation.

A good example was Kylie Mynogue the singer who was forced to have a short cut after her cancer scare.

When she appeared in front of the cameras she looked great with a new short crop looking stylish and defiant.

The short crops rise came at the end of 2006 setting the mood for it to be the hot hairstyle look of 2007.

The catwalks featured it and the glossy magazines followed as more models took up the look.

As we turn into 2007 it's the look to have and there is one for everyone

While an oval face is perfect for a short cut, however with the variety of styles there is a cut for everyone and your hairdresser can advice you on the best way cut for you.

So its short, cute, stylish, sexy and the ultimate in convenience for today's busy women – That's why the short crop is the hot new hairstyle for 2007.

The short hairstyle is one that is both vogue and chic. Both young women and mature women are finding homage in the elegance and sophistication of short hair, not to mention to convenience and ease of maintenance that comes with an outrageously short cut. The shorter haircut is also known to take ages of the face and add youth to one's bounce, hence its popularity among trendy and fashionable older women.

One does not simply just decide to style one's hair short though. Careful thought and consideration is usually given to the final effect of the short cut with regard to the individual woman – not everyone would look like Haley Berry or Angela Jolie in a short cut! The shape of one's face and bone structure has a lot to do with the outcome of a short hairstyle on that person.

For the woman with the round or oval face, one would suggest a bob cut that is graded to the sides to take away the volumes at the sides of the face while adding volume to the top of the head with tousled or unkempt waves. This would create a slimming effect for the face. For the long face however, one would want to stay away from short cuts completely as these are bound to add more height to an already long face. Square faces and heart-shaped faces are the best faces for a short cut, although generally soft bangs are suggested as opposed to severe straight bangs.

Another thing that one has to consider before taking the short cut is the type of hair that one has. While it may be one thing to say shoulder length layers is a good style for you, if you have wavy hair then chances are that upon cutting you would end up with a mess of untamable hair at the top of your head! Remember that when you have naturally long hair, the weight of the hair often reduces the level of curling or waves that you might get. It is very easy therefore to misjudge the effect of cutting a long hair.

Once you do decide to proceed with the ultimate cut however, you need to decide on the type of cut that you want. The layered haircut is one of the most complimentary haircuts that would highlight just about any type of face on any type of woman. It is in fact one of the most popular looks for the short cut that the celebrities in Hollywood show off.

The second most popular short haircuts among the Hollywood celebrities is the bob haircut. The bob haircut has in fact evolved to be one of the most versatile haircuts, for it also takes advantages of other techniques in its cut. Off the most popular hairstyle used in combination with the bob haircut is the layered haircut to give an end result that is the best of both worlds.

As we all know there are some real do and don't with hairstyles specially for women over 40. Your hair changes as you get older and there is no reason to go gray if you choose not to. Hairstyles over 40 as with all ages is highly personal yet you still need tips and ideas of what are good do and don'ts. Here is a good list to think about when deciding about a new hairstyle.

List of do's:

Color your gray, there is no need to be gray unless you really like it. Most of you do not like the idea of being gray, it just makes you look older. That's not what you want!

Get your layers lifted. This means if you don't have layers you might want to look into them. Hair that is all one length tends not to look good on anyone over 40. You drag down your face and make it look older than you are. If you have layers get them redone so that they are lighter on top. Getting the right hairstylist will be able to explain this better for you.

Which leads to:

Finding a good hairstylist. He/She that knows what to do with your features not take away from them. You might have to look around because you are looking for someone who doesn't just work on teenagers or young adults. The hairstyles that someone in their teens to later 30's have may not work for you. Their haircuts are too trendy and seem to follow the latest actors hairstyles. Yet you don't want someone who thinks that having hair when you are over 40 means it's time to start wearing your hair like those from the Golden Girls. Remember those looks? It's a very good idea not to go too short or keep your hair too long. A good A-Line bob that is shoulder length or a little longer works well. Specially if you don't want to give up your long hair just yet.

If you have never high lighted your hair, its time to look into it. Highlights and or lowlights give dimension to anyone's hair. Have no idea what they are, again having a great hairstylist that can explain them to you about what they are and what they can do for you is best. And example is when you lighten your hair around your face it opens it up and you look younger.

Now its time for your list of don'ts:

Do not grow your hair all one length or keep it all one length past your shoulders.

Do not color your hair all one color that is too dark. Just because someone told you once that jet black hair look amazing on you when you were in your 20's doesn't mean it looks that great on you now. Hair that is too dark once you are over 40 will make you look even older. This is what you are trying our hardest not to do!

Do not believe a word of anyone who says coloring your gray hair is difficult to do! This usually comes from someone afraid to change their own gray hair. A good hairstylist again will talk with you about covering your gray with a very natural color so that no one will know that is what you been doing.

Do not pull your hair all back into a ponytail because you just don't want to deal with it. If you find yourself doing this a lot, it's about time to start thinking about a simpler haircut that is more of a wash and go. One that shows you are still as hip and trendy as all woman over 40 are, you are just choosing to have a hairstyle that is easier to work with. A simple ponytail is great when working out, or hanging out at home but not really for anything else. Long hair is very pretty and hard to let go, but the last thing you want is your long hair in a ponytail dragging your looks down and making you look older. Sorry ladies sometimes we have to let it go.
Hope this list of do and don't help give you ideas what you need to do with your hair. Being over 40 doesn't mean we have to give up on what we love just change it a little here and there to keep looking younger as ever.
